Manchester United vs Southampton Preview 12/02/2022

Saturday’s early kick-off in the Premier League sees Southampton travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

Following a string of positive results, Southampton have moved into the top half of the table. They now find themselves tenth – one point clear of Aston Villa. Manchester United sit sixth – one point outside the top four and 11 points ahead of Southampton.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley in midweek, despite enjoying 65% possession and racking up 22 shots. Paul Pogba gave the Red Devils the lead after 18 minutes, while the visitors had a further two goals ruled out. Jay Rodriguez equalised for the hosts just after the break.

Manchester United head into Saturday’s clash on a four-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, having picked up two wins and two draws since losing to Wolves on January 3. When you look at the bigger picture, the Red Devils have lost just one of their previous 11 Premier League outings – securing six wins and four draws in that time.

Southampton came from behind to snatch an impressive 3-2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday. They thoroughly deserved to claim all three points, too, having enjoyed more of the back and the majority of attempts.

Southampton are enjoying a positive run at the moment, with just one loss coming in their past seven league matches. It is also worth noting that Southampton have scored in each of their last seven league outings, netting over 1.5 goals on four occasions during that period.

Southampton haven’t beaten Manchester United since 2016. The Red Devils have won six of the last 12 meetings, with the other six games ending in a draw. Manchester United have scored over 1.5 goals in five of their last six matches against Saints and even thrashed them 9-0 at Old Trafford last February.

As it stands, Eric Bailly is Manchester United's only injury concern. Alex Telles and Fred are also doubts due to COVID-19. Southampton will be without injured duo Alex McCarthy and Lyanco on Saturday, while Nathan Tella and Nathan Redmond are also doubts.

PREDICTION: BOTH TEAMS WILL SCORE AT OLD TRAFFORD. HOWEVER, THE HOSTS ARE EXPECTED TO OUTSCORE THE VISITORS.
